Russia's Army Position in Ukraine Deteriorates Sharply: Monthly Loss Analysis
Russian occupation forces in Ukraine suffered their worst month since September-October 2022 in September 2026, losing 46,230 personnel, the highest figure since January 2025. This came amid Ukrainian counterattacks, particularly the confirmed "Vivaldi" operation on the Lyman axis. September saw 7,090 combat engagements with an average loss rate of 6.5 personnel per engagement, up from 5 in late spring. Russian forces captured only 161 km² of territory, or 66 km² when accounting for Ukrainian recaptures, with losses reaching 700 personnel per km². Key Russian retreats occurred on Lyman, Kupiansk, and southern operational zones. Russian losses included 68 tanks, 207 armored vehicles, 1,601 artillery systems, 95 rocket launchers, a record 86 air defense systems, 13,555 vehicles, and 151 special equipment units. Analysts warn the situation may worsen unless Russia launches general mobilization, as artillery losses exceeding 50,500 units threaten irreversible depletion.
