Kyiv proposes five fixes to avert transport collapse after bridge strikes
Ukrainian authorities have proposed five solutions to prevent transport collapse in Kyiv after Russian strikes damaged the city's bridges, with pontoon crossings being the only measure currently being implemented. Construction of embankment dams with pontoon crossings across the Dnipro River is set to begin in early October 2026 and take about three months. Lawmaker Volodymyr Kreidenko prioritizes ferry crossings for trucks carrying essential goods and passenger ferries between metro stations, though MP Yulia Sirko notes no concrete plan exists and navigation on the Dnipro remains restricted. Other proposals include reversible traffic lanes on bridges, bicycle hubs near metro stations, and alternating driving hours based on license plate numbers. Parliament members express skepticism about pontoons fully replacing bridges, calling them a temporary solution. Despite attacks, completely destroying the bridges remains difficult, so they will continue serving as the main transport arteries.
