Kyiv proposes reversible lanes and plate-based driving hours to ease bridge congestion
Ukrainian lawmakers propose measures to reduce traffic congestion on Kyiv bridges following Russian attacks that caused a transport collapse in the capital. The ideas include reversible traffic lanes and alternating driving hours based on license plate numbers. Deputy Transport Committee Chairman Volodymyr Kreidenko suggested implementing reversible traffic on bridges to adjust lane numbers by traffic flow, while ensuring public transport and emergency services move uninterrupted. He also proposed even-odd driving schedules, where vehicles with even-numbered plates travel during even hours and odd-numbered plates during odd hours, citing successful global practices. Committee member Oksana Savchuk advocated increasing the number of buses and regulating bridge traffic priorities for emergency and public transport. Officials noted these are preliminary ideas, as stationary crossings remain the main logistics focus since destroying the bridges is difficult.
