Germany's Merz visits Kyiv to finalize drone deal and release aid
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday with German defense industry executives to finalize a drone production deal and announce new aid, including 1 billion euros in military assistance and 350 million euros for energy sector repairs, amid escalating Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. Merz said Ukraine needs all possible support in the coming weeks, warning that if Russia is not stopped, its war machine will eventually turn against Europe. The visit aims to finalize a joint venture for drone production, including anti-jet interceptors tested by German firm Quantum Systems, and weapons with a range exceeding 1,000 kilometers. The delegation includes CEOs from Siemens Energy, Hensoldt, Diehl Defence, and Quantum Systems. Merz is also expected to press Ukraine on EU-required reforms, including anti-corruption measures, while Russia warned foreign nationals against traveling to Ukraine and vowed continued retaliatory strikes.
