Ukraine civilian casualties in 2026 already surpass all of 2025
In the first eight months of 2026, civilian casualties in Ukraine have already surpassed the total for all of 2025, with August being the deadliest month, according to UN monitoring data. From January to August 2026, at least 2,222 civilians were killed and 13,058 injured, totaling 15,280 confirmed casualties. This marks a 55% increase compared to the same period in 2025 and more than double the figures for 2024. In August alone, 372 people died and 2,349 were injured, with nearly half of all victims caused by long-range missiles and drones, mostly in cities far from the front line. The 2026 casualty rate is the highest since the early months of the full-scale invasion. The peak year was 2022 with 21,093 casualties, followed by a decline in 2023 and 2024, before a sharp rise in 2025. Based on Ukraine's estimated population of about 29 million, confirmed civilian deaths represent roughly 0.057% of the population, or one civilian per 1,768 residents.
