Kyiv builds emergency Dnieper crossings after bridge strikes
Ukraine will begin emergency construction of reserve crossings over the Dnieper River in Kyiv next week, following recent strikes on the city's main bridges. The work will involve embankments and pontoon crossings. Minister for Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport Nikolai Kalashnik stated the urgent solutions are quickly built dams and pontoons, with work already started. The decision follows recent attacks on the Southern and Northern bridges. Locations are set, with agencies, military, and city authorities involved. Construction is expected to take up to three months, with capacity at least half of existing bridges, which handle about 600,000 cars daily. Long-term options include prefabricated concrete structures and a tunnel, requiring billions in funding, with Ukraine seeking international financial support.
