Russian drone strike sets Kyiv bridge ablaze during Merz's visit
A Russian drone struck Kyiv's Pivnichnyi Bridge on Sunday, setting it ablaze, as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in the Ukrainian capital amid air raid sirens and explosions. Two people were injured in the attack. Merz visited Kyiv to show support for President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying "Ukraine needs all our support in the coming weeks." Zelensky reported Russia launched 135 attack drones overnight, with strikes also hitting a pharmaceutical warehouse in Sumy, killing one person, and a communications facility in Dnipro, injuring six. The bridge was hit for the second time in two days, following five strikes on Kyiv's Southern Bridge last week. Russia said it would intensify strikes after Zelensky vowed to attack oil refineries, while Ukrainian officials warned attacks could disrupt movement across the Dnipro River.
