Kyiv bridge strikes aim to halt traffic, not destroy spans, expert says
Russian strikes on Kyiv bridges are not intended to destroy them, as current weapons lack the capability, but rather to halt traffic and exert psychological pressure, according to aviation expert Konstantin Krivolap. He stated the enemy's goal is achieved by forcing movement to stop. Krivolap said there is no evidence the special cumulative-cutting munition can seriously damage bridges, and the reported use of concrete-piercing bombs is likely for psychological effect. He noted a 50-kilogram warhead hit a power line pole, but no proof of significant structural damage exists. Between October 1 and 4, 2026, Russian drones repeatedly struck Kyiv's Southern and Northern bridges, with one attack hitting as a metro train crossed. The Southern Bridge was temporarily closed for repairs, and a crater was reported on the Northern Bridge on October 4.
