UN reports 15,000 Ukrainian civilian casualties in eight months of war

obozrevatel.com (Ukrainian) —

UN human rights chief Volker Türk told the Geneva Human Rights Council that Russia's war in Ukraine is a "catastrophe," reporting over 15,000 Ukrainian civilian casualties in the first eight months of 2026. This marks a 55% increase in weekly casualties compared to the same period in 2025. The UN verified 15,280 civilians killed or injured, averaging about 400 per week. Türk noted the frontline has remained static while Russian forces intensified strikes on homes, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure, with guided bomb attacks causing nearly 2,500 casualties, up 62% year-on-year. Türk also cited "shocking levels" of sexual violence, attributing 89% of over 1,000 documented cases to Russia, and described Ukraine as a "drone warfare laboratory." He raised concerns about Russian attacks on energy and food infrastructure, the hostage situation in occupied Oleshky, and the recruitment of mercenaries from 36 countries.
