UN reports 55% rise in Ukraine civilian casualties in 2026

The UN Human Rights Office recorded 15,280 civilian casualties in Ukraine during the first eight months of 2026, a 55% increase compared to the same period in 2025. An average of over 400 civilians were killed or injured weekly. Russian guided bombs caused nearly 2,500 civilian casualties on the front line, a 62% increase from last year. UN High Commissioner Volker Turk reported that attacks on schools, hospitals, homes, and infrastructure have intensified, with strikes on energy and commercial facilities causing food shortages ahead of winter. Turk called on states with influence over Russia to push for peace and accountability. The UN also documented 1,004 cases of conflict-related sexual violence since February 2022, attributing 89% to Russian forces.
