EU Vows Unwavering Support for Ukraine Despite Russian Threats to Diplomats
The European Union has stated it will not reduce support for Ukraine in response to Russian threats against foreign diplomats in Kyiv, affirming that Moscow's pressure will not affect the EU delegation's operations or continued assistance. This was announced by European Commission spokesperson Christian Wigand, as reported by RBC-Ukraine. Wigand said Russia is attempting to intimidate European countries to force them to cut aid to Ukraine, but this tactic will not succeed. He emphasized the EU will continue supporting Ukraine, expose Russian actions, and increase pressure on Moscow, calling the threats another intimidation attempt amid the war. The EU is also expanding military support, with plans approved for €28.3 billion in defense purchases under the Ukraine Support Loan and €6.6 billion allocated through the European Peace Fund. The EU delegation's status in Kyiv remains unchanged, following a recent meeting between EU Ambassador Katarina Maternova, EU mission heads, and President Volodymyr Zelensky. Russia had urged diplomats to leave Kyiv, warning of new mass strikes, though Ukraine's foreign ministry denied evacuation plans. Maternova previously reported a drone strike near the delegation building in late September.
