UN reports over 15,000 civilian casualties in Ukraine in first eight months of 2026
The UN has verified over 15,000 civilian casualties in Ukraine during the first eight months of 2026 due to Russian aggression, according to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. Speaking at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Türk reported 15,280 verified civilian deaths and injuries, averaging over 400 per week—a 55% increase compared to the same period in 2025. He noted Russian forces systematically target residential buildings, schools, hospitals, and railways. Türk also documented shocking levels of sexual violence, with Russia responsible for 89% of over 1,000 cases. He called Ukraine a "drone war laboratory" and urged accountability alongside peace, citing attacks on energy infrastructure and food shortages in some regions.
