Russian drone hits Kyiv bridge as German chancellor visits Ukraine
A Russian drone struck Kyiv's Pivnichnyi (Northern) Bridge on Sunday, marking the fourth consecutive day of attacks on major bridges in the Ukrainian capital. Video verified by the BBC shows the drone hitting the bridge as vehicles crossed, creating a large fireball. The strike damaged a heating main, causing temporary hot water outages in the Desnyanskyi district, with no casualties reported. The attack came as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a surprise visit to Kyiv, where he met President Volodymyr Zelensky and reaffirmed Germany's support, saying Ukraine faces "decisive weeks." Russia's defence ministry announced it would intensify strikes on Kyiv and other regions. Zelensky reported a drone attack in Sumy killed one person, while six were injured in Dnipro. Germany has become Ukraine's largest donor since Merz took office in May 2025.
