Merz visits Kyiv to reaffirm German support as Russian drone incidents rise in Europe
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Sunday to reaffirm Germany's support for Ukraine in its war against Russia, amid rising tensions over Russian drone incursions into European airspace. He stated that Ukraine needs all possible support in the coming weeks. Merz, accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche, assured President Volodymyr Zelensky that Ukraine can continue counting on German aid. The visit comes a day after Russia warned foreigners to leave Kyiv, threatening more mass retaliation strikes, and as the capital faces near-daily drone attacks and air defense shortages. The trip also follows increased incidents of Russian drones and missiles in European countries, including Moldova, which summoned Russia's ambassador after recent explosions near its territory. Moldova reported 81 violations since 2022, while Romania and Germany have also reported drone-related incidents, including a suspected hybrid attack at Leipzig airport.
