EU embassies stay in Kyiv despite Russian threats, envoy says

nv.ua (Ukrainian) —

All European Union member state embassies remain in Kyiv despite Russian threats, EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Maternova said, dismissing Moscow's warnings as a sign of frustration over its battlefield failures. Maternova stated that all 25 EU member states with embassies in Kyiv are staying, and that Russian threats will not reduce EU support for Ukraine. She warned Russia against testing the Vienna Conventions governing diplomatic missions, adding that Moscow aims to weaken Western backing but will not succeed. The statement follows Russian Foreign Ministry warnings on October 3 about deadly danger in Kyiv, and a Guardian report on October 2 that Western diplomats privately discussed relocating to Lviv or eastern Poland. Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgy Tykhy denied receiving any relocation requests.
