Kyiv's Pontoon Crossings Won't Replace Destroyed Bridges, Lawmakers Warn
Ukraine's government announced plans to build embankment dams with pontoon crossings across the Dnieper River in Kyiv, but lawmakers doubt these will adequately replace destroyed bridges for logistics and passenger transport. MP Yulia Sirko stated pontoons cannot fully substitute bridges and are only a temporary solution, while MP Oksana Savchuk noted construction takes time and won't solve immediate transportation problems. Minister Mykola Kalashnik announced work starting next week, lasting about three months, aiming to provide at least half of current bridge capacity. Russia's strikes, including a recent hit on the Southern Bridge, have shifted tactics to potentially seriously damage Kyiv's crossings, though Moscow cannot physically destroy them with Shahed drones alone.
