Merz makes surprise solidarity visit to Kyiv, pledges massive military aid
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv by special train on Sunday morning for an unannounced solidarity visit, pledging massive military aid to Ukraine during the ongoing war. Merz announced the delivery of thousands of interceptor drones to strengthen Ukraine's air defense against Russian jet-powered attack drones, alongside releasing one billion euros from approved budget funds for long-range weapons production and 350 million euros for repairing destroyed power plants. He was accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and ten defense and energy industry executives. The visit comes amid heightened tensions, with Russia warning foreign visitors to leave Kyiv just hours before Merz's arrival. This marks his second trip to Kyiv as chancellor, following an unsuccessful ceasefire demand last year, as he now emphasizes military pressure, stating Russia only understands the "language of strength."
