UN reports 15,000 civilian casualties in Ukraine in 2026
The UN verified over 15,000 civilian casualties in Ukraine during the first eight months of 2026 due to Russian aggression, according to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. Türk reported 15,280 verified deaths and injuries, averaging over 400 people weekly, a 55% increase from the same period in 2025. He stated Russian forces systematically target residential buildings, schools, hospitals, railways, and shops, with nearly 2,500 civilians affected by guided bombs in four Ukrainian regions. Türk also highlighted a "shocking level" of sexual violence, attributing 89% of over 1,000 documented cases to Russia, and noted attacks on energy infrastructure causing food shortages. He urged Russian leadership to consider the war's impact on their own society.
