Zelensky announces new defense agreements with Germany to counter Russian attacks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced new agreements with Germany to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities against Russian aggression, following another wave of overnight drone attacks that killed one person and wounded six others. On October 4, Russia attacked Kyiv, Sumy, and Dnipro with 135 strike drones, over 50 of them jet-powered, targeting residential buildings and critical infrastructure, causing power outages. Over the past week, Russia has used more than 1,900 drones, 1,700 aerial bombs, and 25 missiles against Ukraine. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv for an unannounced visit, his first since May 2025. Talks are expected to cover a new military aid package worth 1 billion euros, 350 million euros for energy sector restoration, and a joint drone production agreement to counter Russian jet-powered UAVs.
