Zelenskyy Defies Trump, Vows More Strikes on Russian Refineries
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that Kyiv will intensify strikes on Russian oil refineries despite President Donald Trump's calls for restraint, calling the attacks a necessary response to Moscow's new campaign targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Zelenskyy told Reuters that Ukrainian intelligence obtained documents showing Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a broader winter strategy aimed at pressuring civilians, including strikes on roads, schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure. "We must respond in every possible way," he said, adding that attacks on Russian energy facilities, especially refineries, target the revenue funding Moscow's war effort. The remarks follow Trump's September appeal for Ukraine to stop targeting Russian diesel supplies, citing global fuel shortages and rising prices. Zelenskyy said he sees no signs Russia is interested in an energy ceasefire or broader peace talks, while both sides prepare for another difficult winter of war.
