Merz visits Kyiv to pledge continued German support for Ukraine
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Sunday to pledge continued support to President Volodymyr Zelensky amid escalating Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. He stated Ukraine needs all the support it can get in the coming weeks. Merz, accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche, met with Ukraine's Foreign Minister and planned talks with Zelensky on bilateral and international issues. He affirmed Germany's help would continue, emphasizing cooperation between German and Ukrainian companies. The visit follows a Russian warning for foreigners to leave Kyiv due to impending "massive" airstrikes, which have recently targeted bridges and the energy sector. Kyiv's mayor described the situation as "very dramatic" as winter approaches.
