Civilian casualties in Ukraine in 2026 already exceed all of 2025, UN says
Civilian casualties in Ukraine during the first eight months of 2026 have already surpassed the total for all of 2025, according to UN monitoring data. At least 2,222 civilians were killed and 13,058 wounded between January and August, marking the highest casualty level since the early months of the full-scale invasion. The confirmed total of 15,280 civilian victims represents a 55% increase compared to the same period in 2025 and more than double the figures for 2024. August was the second deadliest month this year, with 372 deaths and 2,349 injuries, nearly half caused by long-range missiles and drones targeting cities far from the front line. Casualty numbers have risen steadily from 6,888 in the first eight months of 2024 to 9,859 in 2025 and 15,280 in 2026. The UN figures indicate Russia has killed approximately 0.057% of Ukraine's estimated 29 million population, or roughly one civilian per 1,768 residents.
