Drone attack hits Kyiv bridge during Chancellor Merz's visit

blick.ch (German) —

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on Sunday for an unannounced visit, pledging continued support for Ukraine, while a Russian drone attack struck a bridge in the capital during his stay. The attack targeted the North Bridge over the Dnipro River, a key artery connecting Kyiv's eastern and western banks, confirmed by Mayor Vitali Klitschko. It followed a Saturday strike that damaged the bridge and halted traffic, with three of six road bridges already partially or fully impassable. Merz, accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche, announced plans to deliver thousands of interceptor drones, one billion euros for long-range weapons production, and 350 million euros for infrastructure reconstruction. This marks his second visit since taking office in May 2025.
