Merz visits Kyiv despite Russian warnings, pledges military and energy aid
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit Sunday, ignoring Russian warnings for foreigners to leave Ukraine, to pledge continued military support. He is accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and a business delegation. Merz will promise thousands of interceptor drones and push production of long-range weapons, releasing one billion euros from approved budget funds. An additional 350 million euros is earmarked for repairing destroyed power plants. This is the fourth chancellor visit since Russia's 2022 invasion. The security situation has deteriorated sharply, with increased drone attacks on Kyiv and civilian targets. Merz stated Russia only understands strength and must be brought to the negotiating table through military pressure, following recent unsuccessful diplomatic contacts with Moscow.
