Kyiv's bridges face wear, not missiles: engineer on repairs and ferries

biz.nv.ua (Ukrainian) —

Russian strikes on Kyiv's bridges threaten logistics, but the main vulnerability is critical wear from years of delayed repairs, not the arsenal, an expert says. Recent drone attacks and debris falls caused traffic restrictions and congestion. Engineer Oleh Grechukh says destroying bridge supports from the air is nearly impossible, as they are far stronger than spans. Repair costs for a new large Dnipro bridge would exceed 15 billion hryvnias and take over two years, making new construction unrealistic. Ukraine has found special steel for bridges during the war, as seen in Chernihiv and Kyiv. Temporary pontoon crossings are possible, but authorities should reduce cross-river travel demand by promoting remote work and local logistics reserves.
