Kyiv's 90% of bridges in emergency state, expert warns of Russian strike risks

unian.ua (Ukrainian) —

An expert stated that 90% of Kyiv's bridge crossings are in emergency condition, making them vulnerable to Russian attacks that would impact logistics, transport, and municipal services. The bridges are reportedly not designed for current traffic volumes. Oleg Popenko, head of the Union of Consumers of Utility Services, said bridges would generally withstand drone strikes but could "crumble" from direct hits. He cited the Paton Bridge's narrowed lanes and the Southern Bridge's frequent repairs due to vehicle overload. Recent Russian strikes on October 1-2 hit the Southern Bridge, closing it to traffic and metro, causing a transport collapse. On October 3, the Northern Bridge was attacked, damaging the roadway and trolleybus network, with traffic now blocked.
