Zelensky: Russia hit Kyiv and Boryspol airports to block Kushner and Witkoff visit

On the night of September 5, Russian forces struck airports in Kyiv and Boryspol for the first time in a long period, an attack Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said was deliberately aimed at disrupting the September 6 visit of US President Donald Trump's special envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, to Kyiv. Zelensky stated the strikes, carried out with Russian-Iranian Shahed drones, were a response to American diplomacy, and that Ukraine would adjust its operations regarding Russian airspace accordingly. He emphasized Ukraine poses no threat to diplomacy, while the envoys were in Moscow on September 5 to deliver a war-ending proposal to Vladimir Putin. Ukraine had previously proposed a ceasefire regime covering both strikes and the front line, a proposal conveyed to Putin but met with no response. Kyiv said it would ensure safe passage for the negotiators, expecting Russia to mirror this by refraining from aerial attacks during the visit.
