Trump envoys meet Putin in Moscow to discuss Ukraine peace plan

President Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin Saturday to discuss U.S. proposals for ending the war in Ukraine, following a suspension of direct talks six months ago. The envoys secured a short pause in airstrikes from both Russia and Ukraine to allow their expected trip to Kyiv on Sunday, with Putin expressing "full trust" in U.S. mediation during the three-hour meeting. Witkoff also thanked Putin for releasing ex-U.S. Marine Robert Gilman. The visit will be the highest-level U.S. official trip to Ukraine since Trump's second term began, and the first international flight to land there since the war started in February 2022, though Russia had escalated drone and missile attacks in recent days.
