Drone strike on SBU building: expert explains possible guidance method

A Russian drone that struck the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) building in Kyiv on September 4 may have used a "docking" mechanism to precisely hit its target, according to aviation expert and former Ukrainian Air Force officer Anatoly Khrapchynsky. He suggested the drone could have corrected its flight path during the mission. Khrapchynsky told LIGA.net that achieving such accuracy likely involved additional in-flight guidance, with many potential tools available for this "docking" process. He clarified this is not real-time control but rather task execution monitoring, possibly using civilian components. A serviceman from the Unmanned Systems Forces agreed the control system for jet-powered Shahed drones remains unclear. The expert stated final conclusions about the guidance method require analysis of drone debris, calling speculation without examination "fortune-telling." Russia is increasing use of jet-powered UAVs, which could improve strike accuracy and complicate Ukrainian air defense. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the drone targeted the office of acting SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad. The September 4 attack injured 15 people and damaged the "Sophia Kyiv" reserve.
