Russian drone strike hits Ukrainian security service HQ in Kyiv

A Russian drone strike hit the headquarters of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) in central Kyiv on Friday, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced. The attack directly targeted the office of the agency's chief, and seven people were wounded. Zelensky said he spoke with SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad, who was not in his office at the time, and ordered a "tangible" and "symmetric" response. Emergency services responded, and streets around the historic site, opposite Saint Sophia Cathedral, were closed. Ukraine called the strike a "grave escalation" aimed at derailing peace efforts, as Kyiv anticipated a visit from Donald Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Sunday. Air alerts sounded repeatedly in the capital on Friday.
