Russian Drone Strikes Ukraine's Security Service Headquarters in Kyiv

A Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) in Kyiv on Friday, marking the first direct daytime attack on the critical government building in 4.5 years of war and highlighting Ukraine's severe air defense shortages. The drone was aimed at the office of SBU chief Oleksandr Pokland, who was inside but unharmed. Twelve people were injured. President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered a "substantial" retaliatory response, while the strike occurred amid eight consecutive days of attacks on Kyiv that have killed 53 people. The attack follows a new peace initiative, with Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner expected to visit Moscow and Kyiv. The SBU, comparable to the FBI, is located near UNESCO-listed Saint Sophia Cathedral, and Ukraine's foreign minister called for international condemnation.
