Russian drone hits SBU headquarters in Kyiv; Zelensky vows 'mirror' response

A Russian drone struck the central building of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Kyiv on September 4, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, who promised a "mirror" response. The building is located opposite the UNESCO-listed St. Sophia Cathedral. Zelensky said the drone was aimed directly at the SBU chief's office and has tasked SBU head Oleksandr Poklad with preparing an adequate and forceful response. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko earlier reported a fire from a drone strike in the Shevchensky district, injuring five people, four of whom were hospitalized. Ukrainian authorities and international organizations classify such strikes on civilian infrastructure as Russian war crimes. Russia denies targeting civilians, while Ukrainian officials and legal experts argue Moscow's actions, including attacks on energy systems and the deportation of children, meet the definition of genocide under the 1948 UN Convention.
