Ukraine's SBU security agency: role, history, and recent drone attack

Russia fired a drone into the headquarters of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) in Kyiv on Friday, an attack Ukrainian authorities condemned as the latest escalation in the war. The SBU, which emerged from the Soviet-era KGB in 1991, oversees domestic security, counterintelligence, and cyber defense. It has conducted drone strikes on Russian military targets and oil refineries, and claimed responsibility for the 2022 Crimean bridge bombing. The agency is led by acting head Oleksandr Poklad, who was not injured in the attack. Its personnel cap is 41,000, and it maintains a long-running rivalry with Ukraine's military intelligence agency.
