Russian Shahed drone strikes SBU headquarters in central Kyiv

A Russian Shahed drone directly struck the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) building on Volodymyrska Street in central Kyiv on September 4, 2026, injuring seven people and destroying a nearby restaurant. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the attack, stating the drone targeted the SBU chief's office. The strike occurred in a protected UNESCO zone near the ancient Saint Sophia Cathedral, a revered 11th-century Orthodox landmark. Zelensky ordered the acting SBU chief to prepare a "mirror" response to Russia. This marks the first such direct attack on the SBU's central Kyiv headquarters during the full-scale war. The restaurant "Zavertaino" was destroyed, though its owners expressed primary concern for guests and staff. Kyiv has faced near-continuous Russian drone attacks since August 27, with Ukrainian air defenses struggling against new jet-powered Shaheds. The cathedral was previously damaged in June 2025, and the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was hit in June 2026.
