Russian drone strike on Kyiv's SBU building injures 12, damages UNESCO site

On September 4, a Russian drone strike targeted the central office of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Kyiv, causing a fire and damaging a nearby building. At least 12 people were injured in the Shevchensky district. The drone hit the SBU building on Volodymyrska Street, opposite St. Sophia's Cathedral, with President Zelensky stating it was aimed directly at the office of SBU chief Alexander Poklad, who was unharmed. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko confirmed rescuers extinguished the fire, but the building's ceiling and outer wall were destroyed. The blast also damaged a nearby bakery and the 14th-century Konsistory building of the Sophia Kyiv National Reserve, a UNESCO heritage site, though the cathedral itself was spared. Zelensky said he ordered a "mirror" response to the attack, with the SBU vowing a painful retaliation.
