Zelensky says Ukraine war likely to continue through winter

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday that the war with Russia appears likely to continue through the winter, despite his "positive" assessment of talks with visiting American envoys in Kyiv. Zelensky stated at a press conference that he hopes for agreements with US partners and counts on European support if the conflict extends into winter, which currently seems to be the case. US envoy Steve Witkoff called on both Moscow and Kyiv to make "compromises" to end the war, saying the American delegation believes it has the necessary elements to achieve a diplomatic resolution. The talks in Kyiv were the first visit by US envoys since they began mediation efforts, following their Saturday meeting with Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Witkoff described the discussions as "very significant," while Zelensky reiterated that territorial questions can only be resolved at the level of presidents.
