Kushner and Witkoff bring Putin's proposals to Kyiv; Zelenskyy demands security guarantees

US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv on Sunday to convey proposals from Saturday's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated his country is ready for talks but requires security guarantees. The US envoys traveled by train from Rzeszów, Poland, after flying there overnight. The Kremlin said the Putin meeting discussed various ideas for ending the war, with US representatives now relaying Putin's positions to Ukraine. This marks the first-ever Kyiv visit for both Trump representatives, with Witkoff having made eight prior trips to Russia and Kushner accompanying him three times. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine's constructive approach, stating peace requires security guarantees and a dignified post-war settlement. Ukrainian officials meeting the envoys included presidential office head Kyrylo Budanov, parliamentary faction leader Davyd Arakhamia, Deputy Foreign Minister Serhiy Kyslytsia, and new foreign intelligence chief Rustem Umerov.
