Witkoff urges Russia and Ukraine to compromise in Kyiv talks

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff urged Russia and Ukraine to make compromises to end the war, stating both parties must reduce disagreements. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insisted territorial issues can only be resolved at a meeting of both heads of state. Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's son-in-law, arrived in Kyiv by train from Poland after talks in Moscow with Vladimir Putin. Security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany were also in Kyiv for the discussions. Zelenskyy stressed the need for security guarantees and a dignified post-war order. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov escalated rhetoric, calling accusations over a drone attack on Leipzig airport "the beginning of a real war." Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine continued mutual air strikes, including attacks on Zaporizhchya and a refinery in Ryazan, despite sparing the capitals during the U.S. mediation mission.
