Ukraine faces up to 70 billion euro budget shortfall in 2027
Ukraine faces a projected budget shortfall of up to 70 billion euros in 2027, according to F.A.Z. information, despite already approved aid. This includes 40 billion euros for defense and 30 billion euros for the regular state budget. Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhij Martschenko stated in Brussels that 32.6 billion dollars are needed for the regular budget and 45 billion dollars for defense. The EU Commission does not fundamentally dispute these figures. The shortfall calculation already includes the second half of the EU loan, worth 45 billion euros, which Ukraine will receive next year. The funding gap stems partly from collapsing revenues, including halted grain exports via the Black Sea since August and intensified Russian attacks on Ukrainian industry. The EU will need to provide an additional 45 billion euros if it maintains its previous two-thirds share of support. The Commission plans to present an initial overview to EU leaders at the European Council meeting in ten days.
