Russia Can Damage Kyiv's Bridges but Not Destroy Them, Expert Says

biz.nv.ua (Ukrainian) —

Russian missiles and drones can seriously damage Kyiv's bridges, but completely destroying them from the air is significantly harder, according to engineer and architect Oleh Hrechukh. The most vulnerable parts are the bridge deck and span beams, which can be pierced, while supports are far more resistant. Hrechukh noted that fully destroying bridge supports from above is extremely difficult, as their foundations are hidden deep underwater or underground. He cited the Antonivskyi Bridge and Kakhovka Dam as examples requiring prolonged, methodical strikes, adding that Kyiv has not yet seen such resources deployed. Since October 1, 2025, Russian forces have launched drone strikes on Kyiv's Pivdennyi and Pivnichnyi bridges, damaging supports and creating a gap, causing traffic restrictions and a transport collapse. In response, the Kyiv City Administration resumed metro service on the green line during yellow alerts, and Ukrzaliznytsia added 18 shuttle trains from October 5.
