Kyiv needs 300 AI turrets to fully cover its airspace, expert says

unian.net (Russian) —

Kyiv has installed 12 AI-controlled automated turrets to counter Russian Shahed drones, but aviation expert Bohdan Dolintse says this number is insufficient for full protection. He stated that at least 100-150 units are needed for effective initial defense of the capital. The turrets use heavy machine guns on rotating platforms, operated by AI to accelerate target detection, tracking, and engagement within tenths of a second. Their effective range is limited to hundreds of meters, requiring multiple defensive lines to cover Kyiv's large area. For complete coverage of Kyiv's 800 square kilometers, Dolintse estimates around 300 turrets would be needed. He also warned that falling bullets from non-explosive rounds can pose a risk to people within a kilometer radius.
