Russian strikes kill 8 in Ukraine as UN debates ending the war

Russian strikes on Ukraine killed at least eight civilians overnight, including six agricultural workers in the Kharkiv region, as the UN General Assembly convened to discuss ending the four-and-a-half-year war. The attacks also hit Kyiv, killing a man and a woman and damaging over 50 civilian sites, while Odesa reported a major bombardment. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow's demand for a comprehensive peace deal, rejecting Ukraine's call for a full ceasefire. The UN reported more Ukrainian civilian casualties in the first eight months of 2026 than in all of last year. Ukrainian drone fragments also caused minor damage in Russia's Rostov and Krasnodar regions, and stray drones entered Romanian and Moldovan airspace.
