Russian Strikes Kill 8 in Ukraine as UN Debates Ending the War

Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine killed at least eight civilians overnight, including six agricultural workers in the Kharkiv region, as the UN General Assembly debates ending the nearly 4½-year war. Strikes also hit Kyiv and Odesa, damaging over 50 civilian sites in the capital. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the UN to starve Russia of revenue through sanctions, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov demanded a comprehensive peace deal, not a temporary truce. The aerial war has intensified, with no significant front-line changes. The UN reported more Ukrainian civilian casualties in the first eight months of 2026 than all of last year. Ukrainian drones also struck western Russia, and stray drones entered Romanian and Moldovan airspace, prompting temporary closures.
