Russian strikes on Ukraine kill five, wound dozens, including captain in Odessa port attack

Russian attacks on Ukraine killed at least five people and wounded dozens more, Ukrainian regional authorities reported. Among the dead was a captain killed in a strike on a cargo ship near the Black Sea port of Odessa. The vessel was sailing under the Antigua and Barbuda flag, and the captain was a Ukrainian citizen, according to Odesa Governor Oleg Kiper. The attack occurred while the ship was navigating the Black Sea, and Ukrainian port authorities confirmed the vessel was targeted during the shelling. Attacks on ports and vessels in the Black and Azov Seas have intensified recently, with Turkey reporting at least 226 civilian and commercial ships hit since Russia's February 2022 invasion, 70 percent of them in the first eight months of this year. Turkey sent a proposal last week to Ukraine and Russia to halt attacks on civilian ships, but neither side has responded.
