One in ten Russian POWs in Ukraine is a foreigner, data shows

As of September 2026, one in ten Russian prisoners of war held in Ukraine is not a Russian citizen, with captives representing 55 countries total, according to the "Khotu Zhyt" project. The project has identified nearly 29,000 foreigners who signed contracts with the Russian armed forces since 022. Russia planned to recruit an additional 18,500 foreigners in 2026, primarily targeting impoverished populations with promises of high pay, though such soldiers are often sent on dangerous assaults. Following diplomatic pressure from other governments, Russia suspended recruitment in 39 countries, including China, India, and several African and Asian nations, while increasing efforts in South America, Central Asia, and Africa. More foreign prisoners were captured in the first nine months of 2026 than in all of 2025, including citizens from Argentina, Panama, Vietnam, and Mongolia.
