Russian strike damages Kyiv data centers, disrupting internet for 100,000 households

A Russian attack on Wednesday, September 23, damaged data centers belonging to Kyiv internet providers, causing service disruptions for some residents, though a complete citywide internet blackout is not expected. The internet operator UTELS reported that one of its data centers lost power, leading to potential network outages, while technicians work to deploy backup lines. The provider "Pautyna" also reported damage to a data center, leaving some subscribers without connectivity. Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation said approximately 100,000 households in Kyiv and the region are experiencing internet problems. Telecommunications expert Oleksandr Hlushchenko said the outages are situational and should be gradually resolved, but the attack exposed vulnerabilities in the infrastructure. He advised operators to decentralize equipment and connections, and recommended users have multiple independent providers to ensure resilience against future attacks.
