Zelensky says Ukraine and US want war with Russia to end before winter

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Tuesday that Washington and Kyiv want the war with Russia to end "before winter" following a "positive" meeting with US President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly. He also stated Ukraine is ready to halt strikes on Russian energy sites if Moscow agrees to do likewise. Zelensky said the pair discussed "potential de-escalatory steps that can open up the way to diplomacy," though he did not know Moscow's position and hoped the "American side will find a way" to bring Russia to negotiations. The conflict has raged since Russia's February 2022 invasion, with intensifying long-range strikes on civilian and energy infrastructure. Washington-led efforts to broker a deal have stalled in recent months as the US shifted focus to its war against Iran. Trump said last week that Ukraine and Russia had agreed not to target each other's energy facilities, a day after he chastised Kyiv for hitting Russian oil refineries.
