Zelensky at UN: Ukraine faces tough winter as war with Russia grinds on

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the UN General Assembly in New York, urging the international community to stop Russia's war and detailing Ukraine's military situation and strategic priorities. Zelensky reported that Russia lost 248,000 soldiers killed and seriously wounded from January to August, a figure exceeding the population of 21 countries. He stated Russia captured 1,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory this year, with Ukraine having liberated a significant portion. He also noted North Korea sent troops to support Russia, suffering heavy losses, and that two North Korean prisoners were transferred to South Korea. Zelensky accused Putin of repeatedly promising to capture Donetsk Oblast, estimating this was the 17th or 18th such promise in five years, and claimed Putin seeks more Ukrainian cities. He called for halting Russia's ability to finance the war rather than easing sanctions on oligarchs, and acknowledged Ukraine faces a difficult winter, warning that Ukraine would make it painful for Russia in response. He stressed the importance of diplomacy and strength, expressing regret over no direct talks with China's leader.
