Trump and Iran trade threats as peace talks stall

President Donald Trump said US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff held a three-hour "very good" meeting with Iranian officials Tuesday, hours after he threatened to "annihilate" Iran if no peace deal is reached. Trump spoke in New York during the UN General Assembly. The Iranian delegation reportedly walked out of the meeting upon hearing Trump's threats, which included saying he could "drive them into hell." Iran said it is willing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the US lifts military pressure and the naval blockade, and conveyed peace conditions through a Qatari mediator. A CNN/SRSS poll shows about one in four Americans approve of the administration's handling of the Iran war, with nearly three-quarters disapproving. Republican candidates in battleground states are breaking with Trump over the conflict, and Senator Bernie Sanders called the annihilation threat a war crime.
