US Invites Putin to G20 Summit, Rubio Hopes for Trump Meeting
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the US has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the upcoming G20 summit, expressing hope for a potential meeting with President Donald Trump. He stated this could provide an opportunity for dialogue with world leaders in December. Rubio reiterated a firm stance on Iran, saying Tehran must never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, which remains the focus of US-Iran talks. Special envoy Steve Witkoff reported constructive discussions with the Iranian delegation, though Rubio declined to share details on a memorandum of understanding. Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Rubio said the southern route remains open with increasing daily oil traffic, crediting US military efforts in ship protection and mine clearance. He accused Iran of continued attacks on vessels, with US surveillance and security operations ongoing in the region.
